Embracing the Motive of Jesus

Embracing the Motive of Jesus

Passage: Matthew 22:34–40

We often focus on the work of Jesus—His miracles, His teachings, and His ultimate sacrifice—but have we ever truly stopped to consider His motive? Why did He do what He did, and what is intended to drive our own lives as His followers?

In this message, we explore the final week of Jesus' life, where a lawyer's attempt to entrap Him led to the revelation of the two greatest commandments. These aren't just rules to follow; they are the foundation upon which the entire law and the prophets hang.

Key Points of Study:

  • Loving God Supremely: What it means to love God with all your heart (desire), soul (decisions), and mind (will).

  • The Myth of "Spiritual Schizophrenia": Addressing the gap between our Sunday devotion and our weekday reality.

  • Loving Others Self-Forgetfully: Why love for our neighbor is inextricably bound to our love for God, and how that love must be benevolent, sacrificial, and inclusive.

  • Love as the Fulfillment of the Law: Understanding why, where love is present, rigid law becomes unnecessary because service and sacrifice flow naturally from the heart.

"On these two commandments depend the whole law and the prophets." — Matthew 22:40

Reflection for the Week:

As you go to bed each night this week, ask yourself: How well have I demonstrated love to God and others today? Was I motivated by love, or by something less?
